Inspired by some viral videos, the poet Donika Kelly wrote about hippos. Sort of. The Poetry Society of America shares her “Poem to Remind Myself of the Natural Order of Things” and a short essay about its origins. Great mentor poem and text to try out! Who’s with me? We’ve recently had two elephant babies born at the Columbus Zoo, and like Donika, I’ve ached a bit for them to be in the wild, instead of on concrete.

Patricia, I can understand why you left social media; what a mess the Internet can be at times. But the poem could be fun! I do hope you’ll join us. Sometimes just the search yields the subject. I am already trying to think of something to write about. Donika Kelly’s poem packs a wallop in just a few lines.
