Using ideas from last week, I created another new poem using headlines from the Sunday New York Times. I'll let it speak for itself. Again I thank the late Lorraine O'Grady for the inspiration.

For 2025 I am fortifying myself with, among other things, Year of Wonder: Classical Music to Enjoy Day by Day, by Clemency Burton-Hill. She offers a short essay and music recommendation for each day of the year. Perhaps this will lead to some poems? Who knows!

The last Poetry Friday roundup for 2024 is at Michelle Kogan's More Art 4 All. Word Press bloggers, I apologize that my comments on your blogs do not show up; for some reason, they sometimes disappear into the ether.

Susan, rumors and lies, indeed! “Metamorphosis feels serious” is a such a loaded line. You did a great job documenting the mood of the day.

Thanks, Tracey! I did not even see the theme when I was highlighting various lines. It took a lot of rearranging to figure it out. But somehow it’s there in the paper, too!

Yes, let’s “Roar Back,” your poem seems to be in the same vein as mine. “Undocumented/Desperation and Betrayal” all powerful thoughts and lines. Thanks for your strong poem leading into 2025! And thanks for the book recommendation took sounds intriguing.

I’ve definitely got some of that “undocumented desperation and betrayal” going on, but thank you for your final line. I will make it my mission to “ROAR BACK!”
I’m so tempted to join you in your daily excursion into classical music. I’m a sucker for “bit-a-day” projects. I can’t wait to see what poetry comes from your listening/learning!

Susan, I did the classical music “Year of Wonder” one year and was introduced to some lovely pieces…you’re gonna love it!

Wow… this is really something. A whole year of headline poems would be powerful, honestly…
    Metamorphis IS serious, isn’t it?

Mary Lee, I think you might like this classical-music book, too! We need to fortify ourselves to roar back, right?
Irene, how fun! Isn’t it a lovely book?
Liz, I just may have to try each Sunday to create something. You’re giving me ideas. Yay!

Thank you, Tanita! I lived your haibun as well. How awesome is it that both you and Liz ended on singing!

I love the idea of a poem composed only from headlines! A found poem from entire articles can be daunting. This is almost like book spine poetry, except you can delete the words you don’t want! Happy New Year, Susan :>)

And Happy 2025 to you, Laura! Clipping headlines feels very productive and craftsy; maybe I’ll figure out how to make these look better visually, too. I cut what appeals and then arrange the words.

A hard-copy edition of the paper! Ours generally sits unread but Dear Subscriber will not hear of unsubscribing. You make fine use of your clippings, Susan. YEAR OF WONDER seems like an excellent expenditure of time and attention. My daughter and I had thought to listen to a new album every day of 2025 but I don’t think I have time for that…or a nice book of essays to guide us. Happy, merry and bright to you and yours!

Yes, a hard copy every Sunday! As a former New Yorker, do you remember how fun it was to buy the Sunday paper on Saturday night? I loved that. I wonder if one can still do that. The YEAR OF WONDER essays are short (a page or less), so it’s a doable project. Happy 2025 to you, Heidi!

Oh I love the headline poems. I did this as a challenge to myself for a bit–I bought the Sunday NYT and created poems from it. It might be a fun April challenge for me!

Susan, rumors and lies are an interesting topic. Headline pieces create pop-up poems-wonderful! 2025 may be the time to roar back at life. Happy Holidays!

Thanks, Karen! And you’re welcome, too. I’ll be thinking of ways to “roar back,” too. Maybe we do need a t-shirt, after all.
